Kings County Chapter of the Schizophrenia Society of Nova Scotia Meetings

Info Sessions 2011
The Schizophrenia Society in Kings County has arranged a set of “INFO SESSIONS” for the first four months of the year. Those sessions will be held on the evenings of the third Wednesday in the month, in the hall of the Kentville Lions Club on River Street in Kentville. Start time is 7.00 pm.

For January 19th it will be viewing and discussing the video produced by CBC which was cablecast last September. The title is: “Changing your Mind” in the David Suzuki series, The Nature of Things. Margaret and Don Burton will lead the session. The video shows new treatments for diseases and disorders which had been thought to be incurable. This is the growing awareness of the neuroplasticity of the brain of an adult which had thought to be incapable of fundamental change.

In February the emphasis will be on cognitive training and the cognitive side to therapy for those who are mentally ill. We will have one or more providers attending and will cover some of procedures  of pyscho-social therapy. That will be on the evening of Wednesday February 16th.

On the 16th of March representatives of the Healthy Minds comedy group will make a presentation on the benefits of laughter and humour for mental health. That will be preparation for the April First Dessert Party “Laughter is the Best Medicine”.

In April there will be a follow up on the November session on the collaboration of police services and the court system with mental health services. The panel that evening will include representatives of the police and Mental Health Services.
